Get started with an instrument

When you open Logic Pro, it's not easy to know where to start! How do I create an instrument? How do I get a sound?

First, use the down arrow key to move down to the first instrument track, labelled Inst 1. Then look for a tiny, tiny little triangle which you'd probably never even notice, and hold that down;

I've picked an electric piano sound, but it could be anything you fancy. Boom! Load up different instruments on different tracks and start playing around.

What it does

What you've done here is to load a Channel Strip Setting. This is like a preset, which loads several plugins at once. The one I chose loaded five plugins, one instrument and four effects;

The instrument is an Audio Unit plugin built into Logic, called the EVP88; it is a software model of an electric piano.

The effects plugins used here are also part of Logic. They work in order from top to bottom; a compressor (Comp), a reverb (GoldVerb), a ring modulater/pitch shifter effect, (Ringshift) and an equaliser (ChanEQ).

(Confusingly, the little graphic at the top labelled EQ is also the ChanEQ; they are the same thing!)

As you work with Logic, you'll want to start loading your own combinations of instruments and effects instead of using these presets, but the Channel Strip Settings are a good place to get started.
